Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken - Mendenhall - Memphis, TN

Sometimes it seems like I get on a roll for a certain type of blog post and this week happens to be focused around food it feels like :). That is except for Monday's post which was all about my sweet, darling, husband!!

So as I mentioned yesterday hubby and I found ourselves in Memphis over the weekend. Now if there is one thing about us, when we travel we prefer to try and find restaurants that aren't "chain" restaurants that we can get around home. Now that's not to say we won't eat at a chain restaurant, we just avoid the ones we have readily accessible at home.

When we checked into our hotel on Saturday evening hubby asked at the front desk a good place to eat in Memphis. They asked what we were looking for and hubby said something indigenous to the area. Then he explained we're not from around here and we like to try new places. One of the gals spoke up and said her favorite place to eat was Gus's Fried Chicken. She asked if we liked fried chicken and hubby was like, who doesn't :). We got to the hotel around 4:30 or 5 so we took our stuff in and killed some time before we went on the hunt for Gus's Fried Chicken on Mendenhall. By the way, it was a hop, skip and a jump away from our hotel, score!

When we walked in the hostess seated us. We placed our order and then started playing with the camera obviously :)

One thing I always associate with the south, other than Sweet Tea (which is awesome in Memphis by the way) is Fried Green Tomatoes. They had them on the menu as an appetizer so hubby and I decided we needed to partake in some good ole southern food! Other than mine kept falling apart on me and I think I wore some of it, very good. Definitely something to go to the south for!!

Hubby ordered the Three Piece White which came with 2 Breasts and a Wing. Normal plates come standard with baked beans and coleslaw but you can sub some of their other sides for 50 cents so hubby subbed potato salad for his coleslaw. Might I say... the beans didn't do it for me (but beans rarely ever do...) but the potato salad was very good. Don't worry I didn't eat any of his chicken because I got my own :). (this picture is missing a breast because they had to bring it out to him.)

I ordered the 2 piece white which came with a Breast and a Wing. Since I'm not a bean fan, I subbed Mac and cheese for my beans. I never realized I liked coleslaw so much until I ate this coleslaw and obviously they can all taste different but this one was awesome! The Mac & Cheese was good too. Not like any I've had before but darn good! And the Chicky. Oh the Chicky. Let's just say, there might be a reason for the "World Famous" to be in their name....

I just loved the sign. It cracked me up! Oh and I didn't get a picture of it but the building was an old brick building. I personally LOVE brick buildings.

The waitress asked if we wanted a Fried Pie for dessert. Now I must say, her accent threw me and I almost wasn't sure what she said. I love southern accents! Hubby and I decided that we weren't extremely hungry for pies right this minute but that we should get some to take with us. Let dinner settle a bit.

We ordered a Cherry and an Apple. She went back and had them made and brought them to us in a sack with spoons and napkins in case we needed to get into them while we were in the car :). The hotel was only about 2 miles at most or so so we dug in once we got to the hotel room. When we pulled it out of the sack, we saw that the Cherry was so hot, it melted through the Styrofoam container. Woops!

Since we got 2 pies, we split half of each to be nice and allow the other to try both! :). We're sharing like that. Remember Sharing is Caring. (we're not like Joey in Friends, "Joey doesn't share food!" lol). I really thought the Cherry was going to be my absolute, mostest, favoritest...... (the computer doesn't like my choice of words... lol)

but it turns out that I actually preferred the Apple over the Cherry. Go figure huh? But don't get me wrong, both were EXCELLENT!

And that my friends, was our experience at Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken. I can tell you, it pays to ask the locals where to eat!!

BB King's Blues Club - Beale St - Memphis, TN

just a random thought... ewwww did you realize that today is Tax day?

************************************************

Sometimes my husband and I just might surprise you. This weekend happened to be one of those times, I think we almost surprised ourselves actually.... Um.... we went to Memphis, TN. Wait, what, are you scratching your head too? Don't worry cause I think so are we. The closest I'd ever been to Memphis was the airport catching a connecting flight and he might have driven through but that was it. Well that is until this weekend. I do think we might need our head examined but whatever.

Hubby said he wanted to eat at BB King's so that's where we went for lunch on Saturday. I had no complaints because I'm not even sure what Memphis has to offer :).

When we got there, we were afraid there was a wait to get in, but it was just a big party that was standing in the doorway. Once they were seated it was our turn. We even got seated just to the side of the band. The only bad thing is it made it loud, but the band was good so it was all good :).

Well Hello all, just wanted you to know we were actually there :). btw, isn't he so darn cute! :).

So the waiter came by to take our order. First we ordered sweet tea. Now everyone says when you go south that the sweet tea is so sweet you can't stand it, but let me tell you, this was some AWESOME sweet tea!

Then the waiter came to take our order. (He took mine first but still just go with the order of the pictures.) Hubby asked him what the best thing on the menu was and the waiter just smiled, wrote something down, took his menu and walked off. Hubby was like, wait what is it?!?! The waiter just shook his head and continued walking. Hubby looked at me and said, um... I hope it isn't the $30 steak on the menu because I'm not in the mood for that.. lol.

Sadly this picture doesn't even begin to do this food justice. When our food came hubby got half a chicken, ribs, slaw, beans and a cornbread biscuit. Yup, I do believe that waiter knew exactly what he was doing! I ate a few bites of everything on hubbys plate, including the beans and I don't care much for beans. They weren't bad either. But that chicken and those ribs. Holy awesomeness!

As we were driving there, I was looking at the menu on my phone. I ran across Cajun Carbonara but didn't really think I wanted pasta until I ordered. OMG, I made a good choice! Ziti and Parmesan cream sauce with bacon, sauteed onions, scallions and crushed red peppers with blackened chicken breast. Served with garlic toast. Hello yumminess!

We did learn that sometimes it's okay to say, what's good and let the waiter take over. How friggin cool is that? And mine... well yum! That's all! So have you ever been to Beale Street in Memphis? Yeah Hubby and I were following directions from the GPS and wound up driving down it when we shouldn't have. Woops! If you saw us, hope you waved!! The barricades weren't completely covering the street and we didn't realize it.

Where would you be if you weren't with me?

So the hubbs and I were driving down the road yesterday and we were listening to the Crook & Chase Country Countdown. One year ago today Lee Brice's "A Woman Like You" was the number one song of the countdown.

I was the one driving and I'd just sit there and giggle at some of the lyrics just because, well I'm not really sure why but the lyrics were just cracking me up. Then when it got to the point in the song where he sang, "She just smiled and rolled her eyes," I actually smiled and rolled my eyes.

So jump forward a couple of hours and hubby was now driving and I was sitting in the passenger seat and I looked at him and said, "So Where would you be if it weren't for me?"

His response was, "Looking for a girl like you." I giggled and rolled my eyes. Then I made the comment that just after we started dating he actually got an offer to go back to The Stan (Afghanistan) for 2 years but he chose to stay in the states because of me. I said, "You'd probably have gone back." He said, "Yeah, probably so, but at least in Afghanistan I'd have had Facebook so you could have found me and we could have had the conversation about when I was coming back for leave and you could have asked me to go on a date with you and then you could have kicked me in the crotch and I could have fallen in love with you and we'd be right where we are now."

I just sat here and cracked up laughing and he said, "You know I'm going to tell little Miss Peanut that story right? I plan on telling her, back in the day when your mother and I were dating, on our very first date she made quite the impression on me and that right there is how you find a good man! Every man you ever plan on dating, on that first date just haul off and knock him there. If he's a good one he'll stick around." I was just sitting in the passenger seat laughing my head off.

So then we actually talked seriously about where he'd be. He'd have probably done The Stan thing, come home on leave and started a new house and had it and everything else he owed on paid off after that two year tour and then he'd come home and who knows where he'd be. Then he looked at me and said, "But I got something better, I got you."

Let me tell you, talking to a pregnant woman who has crazy hormones running through her body isn't so nice, I just about broke down crying.

So there we have it boys and girls, I do think I'll keep him. But if you ever questioned that, you should read every other lovey dovey post I've ever posted about him because it tells you how I really feel about him.

Hyatt Place - Leawood, KS (Kansas City)

So last month when hubby and I decided to get away for a few days, he made reservations at the Hyatt Place in Leawood, KS. We were close enough to downtown Kansas City that it didn't take any time at all to get there, but at the same time, we learned that Leawood was a great little suburb all of its own.

We were on the second floor. Our room had a King sized bed, a living room area that included a hide-a-bed couch, a small kitchen table, and a refrigerator.

When we booked our room we went with a King size bed. I can sure tell you that we're going to start spoiling ourselves with these King sized beds!  The mattress was definitely something that you could get used to as well. If I could have folded it up and put it in my suit case to take home I might have... lol :).

And of course your bathroom area.

Now for all you techy people, this place was cool because it had this connector panel so you could connect your laptop up to the tv. So if you had movies on an external hard drive or your laptop, you could feed them through the tv and enjoy.

This was definitely a nice room to stay in, especially the Monday when we were in there ALL. DAY. LONG.

Red Robin - YUM!

Did anyone else have to say the Yum after the Red Robin? Boy those Advertising agents did their job in getting that slogan out!

I remember back in like 2008 or 2009 when I started hearing them refer to Red Robin commercials I didn't have a clue what Red Robin was. One of the guys I worked with was walking by one day and somehow we got to talking about it. He told me he was originally from Washington and it was a Western burger type thing but it was definitely something I needed to try.

Since then I've eaten at one a few times, and yes I would have to agree with him. He knew what he was talking about!

Here recently hubby and I were able to eat at the Red Robin in Springfield as we were passing through and now I need to fess up that ever stinking time I pass through there and eat and take photos I forget to take a dang picture of the building. I laugh every time too. Oh well!

When hubby and I got there, we were both thirsty! As usual, they ask for your drink orders first, score!

The last time we were there I tried to order the Very Berry Raspberry Limeade and the waiter brought me a Strawberry Lemonade so this time I made sure to get my Very Berry Raspberry Limeade. Hello YUM!

Hubby went with the Strawberry Lemonade though. He doesn't like raspberries and loves strawberries so it was a win for him!

When hubby's burger came I had to "yell" at him because he tried to take the burger bun off and start "jacking" with it. All in the name of the blog people, all in the name of the blog!

I went with Chicken. I made hubby try a bite of this and he's like, Wow, that's flippin awesome. Yes he said flippin, no cuss word has been changed, promise! :).

Then when our check came I saw a deal advertising the Red Robin Royalty thing. The waitress asked if we had a rewards card and I said, No, I saw the little flier on the outside and so she said she'd bring us one. She told us all we needed to do was go on line and sign up and we'd be all set to receive the points.

And there you have it folks... Yummy food! :) This has been one heck of a past couple weeks and the next few weeks don't seem like they're going to let up. Is it the end of the semester yet? Please put me out of my misery!

Week 27

How far along? 27 weeks 6 days

Total weight gain/loss: So by the drs scales yesterday it looked normal, whatever normal is :) So far they haven't yelled at me anyway!

How big is baby? Baby is the size of a Rutabaga. What is a Rutabaga? Anyway at 13.6 to 14.8 inches and 1.5 to 2.5 lbs. she's not just getting bigger, she's getting smarter.
  • She's practicing inhaling and exhailing with her rapidly developing lungs.
  • It's official: Baby's showing brain activity! And her brain will keep getting more complex.

Maternity Clothes? Should this even be a question at this point? Have you seen the pictures above?

Stretch Marks? Oh they're soooooo scary!

Best moment this week?Hearing the babies heart beat again! We came in at around 135 beats per minute.

Movement? She's been moving like a CRAZY woman! The drs gave me a belt to help keep her off my hip because that's where she's been hanging out, I'm fairly certain that ticked her off royally!

Food Cravings/Aversions? Nothing new here...

What I miss: Being able to tie my shoes. I had to retie my shoe in the drs office yesterday, holy cow that's difficult!

What I'm looking forward to: I'm actually looking forward to meeting this little girl. Earl got her a pair of shoes I"m not supposed to know about yet but anyway I do and HOLY COW are they friggggggggiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnn cute! In fact I saw them and was ready to buy them but hubby conned me out of it. Then Early got them for her without me knowing and actually before she knew I wanted to get them and I screamed and screeched because they're sooooooo awesome.

Nausea/Vomiting? We've been good here so far.... knock on wood!

Labor signs? Well I don't think so....

Gender? We have had them verify it's a girl 3 different times. Think it's a girl?!?!

Belly Button in or out? Oh this is such a sore (literally) subject!

Wedding rings on or off? This is another sore subject. Sadly they're off. As I stated, hubby got me some replacer rings until I can get mine back on. So yesterday I forgot them and felt so weird walking around a pregnant woman without wedding rings on. It was awful!

Sleep? This week has been a come and go week. Early in the week baby girl was hurting me so bad I really didn't get but a couple hours of sleep a night. Then we got her off my hip and it has been easier, knock on wood!

Weekly Wisdom: So something I learned this week is that if the baby is laying on something (hip, kidney, bladder, etc) and is hurting you, if you take a really cold bottle of water or a piece of ice and place it on your stomach where the baby is hurting you they'll scamper off of that and give you some relief. It doesn't hurt you and it doesn't hurt the baby. Then the nurse at the drs office told me to alternate heat and cold to get the pain away. So there you go, if you have issues, hopefully this can help!!

Due Date: Thursday June 26, 2014 was what we originally thought. Then I was told June 30, then July 4th, then June 26, then June 27 and after the 3-D ultra sound June 28. I guess she'll come when she's ready, right?
